Join the Women’s Wine Alliance for an immersive seminar at Lost Cause Meadery led by co-founder Billy Beltz, one of the most respected educators and innovators in modern mead making. Often called the world’s oldest fermented beverage, mead is experiencing a renaissance—and this session offers a front-row seat.
Billy will guide attendees through the fundamentals of mead production, from honey selection and fermentation to yeast, nutrients, and style development, drawing on his extensive teaching and research background. The seminar will include a guided tasting of Lost Cause’s award-winning meads, showcasing the range, complexity, and versatility of this ancient beverage.

Billy Beltz Bio:

Billy Beltz is the Co-Founder of Lost Cause Meadery located in San Diego, CA. Established in 2017, Lost Cause Meadery specializes in crafting high quality meads across a wide variety of styles and has become one of the most awarded meaderies in the world.
Billy has taught mead making at the Robert Mondavi Institute at UC Davis as well as at UC San Diego’s Brewing Certificate program, and in 2019 was awarded the Ken Schramm Award by the American Mead Maker Association for his commitment to education in the mead community. That same year Billy teamed up with White Labs to conduct a research project on nutrients in mead making and his experiments with yeast strains have been published in American Mead Maker and Zymurgy. Billy is also BJCP Certified Mead Judge.
